KidWind Challenge Workshop - Manhattan, KS

Location: Manhattan Public Library, Groesbeck Room (629 Poyntz Ave, Manhattan KS 66502)

Are you curious about teaching wind energy in your classroom? Do you want to join the KidWind Challenge, but aren't sure how to begin? Maybe you are a veteran KidWind Challenge coach looking for new resources! Join us and learn how to explore the power of wind energy with your students!

Who Should Attend: Recommended for teachers of grades 4-12. Workshops are open to formal and non-formal educators.

Description: This FREE workshop offers hands-on training to teach energy concepts to students in grades 4-12. Through interactive activities with Vernier materials and diverse curricula (KEP, KidWind, and NEED), attendees gain the skills and knowledge needed to integrate energy topics into their own curriculum. The training emphasizes real-world applications, problem-solving, and STEM skills, empowering educators to inspire the next generation of innovators.

Agenda (tentative):

  • 9:00 - 9:10am: Introductions
  • 9:10 - 9:30: Kansas Energy Program - overview of resources and opportunities
  • 9:30 - 10:30: Wind101 Introduction
  • 10:30 - 11:30: Sailcar/MacGyver Challenge or Age Division Breakout Session (Firefly or Generators)
  • 11:30 - 12:00: Renewable vs. Energy Efficiency + K-12 Benchmarking
  • 12:00 - 1:00: Lunch 
  • 1:00 - 1:20: Introduction to KidWind
  • 1:20 - 1:40: Introduction to KidWind turbines
  • 1:40 - 3:00: Wind turbine design competition
  • 3:00 - 3:30: Q&A and follow-up discussion

Included: Lunch, Substitute Reimbursement, and a Vernier Wind Experiment Kit (valued over $130)!
